If we could have left today, we would have. The three of us are about as ready as we’re ever going to be and the waiting truly is the hardest part. We each busied ourselves in different ways. Frankenbutt continued to work on the bikes, re-checking every aspect of our bikes and the trailer. The Beast read more of her history book and loaded her aluminum cans into the truck for a last run to the recycling center where she picks up a few bucks being “green”. I sorted out the food and clothes we plan to pack and also stitched up a seam on Coco’s soft side kennel. Coco seemed unfazed by our activities until she saw her bike trailer on the front lawn. She jumped up on the chair at the window and watched intently as Frankenbutt replaced the wire ties that hold it in place. Before long, she convinced the Beast to let her outside. She ran directly to her trailer and jumped up onto it instead of going in through the front screen door. She sat there contentedly for at least half an hour while Frankenbutt went about his tasks, unwilling to accept that it wasn’t a ride day.
By mid-morning, I received an email from Jerry at BMXmania.com confirming that he had published our first weekly update blog. We’ve agreed to provide BMXmania.com exclusive tidbits about our ride that you won’t find on our own website. Check it out and you’ll see what I mean: www.bmxmania.com . Thanks, Jerry, and a big welcome to all our new BMXmania.com readers who have found their way to our site.
I also spent some time today reviewing our route plan, making campground reservations, fielding phone calls from the NBL and setting up our “where are they now?” aspect so that our readers can track where we are. We will be posting instructions on how to see our current location on our Wednesday night blog. Don’t worry, it’ll be easy … I’m not a techie so I tend to keep it simple. Until then, follow us on www.twitter.com by searching “ridethenation”. It’s easy and we will be posting short mid-day updates, once we put the rubber to the road this Wednesday.
In case you’re wondering, we did not ride today. As planned, we rode hard last week, did a recovery ride on Sunday and are “resting” today and most of tomorrow. Although we do not have a professional trainer, Frankenbutt has researched all types of training and came up with a plan that has worked really well for us. So, if he says we rest, we rest. But, of course, I’m restless!
I stumbled across an interesting bicycle story today, while I was between loads of laundry. Apparently Ikea gave over 12,000 bicycles to its employees this past Christmas. If you’d like to read more about it, check out the whole story at http://www.examiner.com/bicycle-travel-in-national/cykels-for-everyone-ikea-gifts-employee-with-bicycles . I love that story!
We hope to have some more exciting news tomorrow about some possible newspaper coverage of our EPIC bicycle ride. Until then, feel free to weigh in with your wisdom and advice by clicking on the “add comment” at the end of this blog.
