After having 3 full weeks of almost no rain, we got the mother load of rain at Clemmons, NC’s Dixieland National event this weekend. The Friday night pre-race was cancelled all together because of rain; then the Saturday National race started but was temporarily shut down as BMX dads accessed their Doppler Radar apps on their smart phones. Volunteers ran out to help cover the track and keep it as dry as possible as the clouds opened up and dumped loads of rain on us.
As I looked around the dinner table, I swelled with pride. My own extended family dinner table can be pleasant but it never gets as fun as when I’m with my BMX family. BMXers are the most laid back, easy going, funny story telling group of people I’ve ever known … AND they are not judgemental! (maybe just “mental”).
We told stories of our childhood and we all shared the common “belt spanking” from parents of the former generation. Donnell had us in stitches as we sipped at Cranberry juice in rock glasses while the kids ate and laughed at the “kids’ end” of the table. At one point, Donnell pulled his “Boa Constrictor” size belt off and I swear I think I saw his kids shudder! (just kidding, Donnell is puddy in those boys’ hands!)
Today we ride towards Petersburg, VA for a Wednesday evening arrival on May 18th and then to Richmond, VA for a Thursday evening May 19th arrival. We are also planning to join the “bike to work” ride in Richmond, VA on Friday morning, May 20th, arranged by Bud Higgins of Virginia. We’ll be sad to leave our Georgia and Carolina friends behind but Virginia is looking pretty enticing, too. Thanks to all of the great tracks we’ve visited so far who made our time there so memorable. WE LOVE YOU GUYS!
