It was really cool waking up in St. John’s Church this morning. We were surrounded by beautiful furnishings and a sense of safe. We wished we could have spent more time enjoying our unique experience but there were exciting things ahead. We dressed and packed down our panniers and bed rolls and met Bud Higgins for the short ride to Monroe Park for the Richmond, VA Bike to Work day.
When we arrived, many had already heard about our trip via the www.vabike.org website and it’s president, Champe Burnley. We joined the crowd to hear the mayor’s speech as he recognized all the people in Richmond who have helped to make it a truly bicycle friendly city. He also welcomed us and that was cool! Lots of riders asked the Beast about our adventure and many were surprised to hear that she brought her baby, Coco, with her.
After the ride, we were invited to join some riders for breakfast at Perly’s, a charming local restaurant. We were prepared to buy breakfast for Bud Higgins, who had been instrumental in coordinating our Virginia stops, but were surprised when a fellow rider we didn’t know before today picked up the check for the whole table. We have felt so spoiled!
We hugged Bud goodbye and headed off to a local McD’s to update our blog. Our Computer was running rather slowly and I lost connection a few times. The Beast pointed out the change over to the lunch time menu and we ended up grabbing a few burgers before I finally finished my computer work.
The Beast eyed an antique store she wanted to check out and we stopped again. She bought a beautiful handkerchief and was quite pleased with her purchase. I saw a grocery store and picked up some contact lens solution and some oversized bandages to deal with some heat rash I’ve developed on my upper belly.
We also saw a Dick’s Sporting Goods store and Frankenbutt and the Beast each got another pair of padded riding shorts. I got a better fitting top for riding that should help with the heat rash I’ve developed. Two of the tops I packed have quickly faded in the sun and the elasticity has definitely started to give out.
