We gave an interview today with The Tampa Tribune (Hernando County Edition) and then rode out of town around noon. We had beautiful weather and arrived at Tampa BMX about 3:30pm and the fun got underway around 5:30. When the track staff arrived, we asked to put our electronics on charge and then we spent the next hour receiving well wishes from our fellow BMXers. At 7pm, our Track Director, Art Heinrichs, called us up to the tabletop in the first straight and made the official announcements about our sponsors. We received our new Riderz Ready official “Ride the Nation” jerseys … they are fabulous! We all put them on and admired each other!
Art also presented the week of BMX training camp that Ohio Dreams has sponsored the Beast for and the $1000 in Comfort Inns and Suites gift cards. We are in a tent tonight at the BMX track and believe me, the Comfort Inn is sounding mighty attractive! Can’t wait to give those gift cards a whirl!
We received our BMXmania.com envelope, National Bicycle League sponsorship and Schwalbe tires discounts and we can’t wait to keep you informed via this blog and BMXmania.com. We were thrilled that the owners of the Smoothie King in Wesley Chapel, FL were here to personally present us with their sponsorship! In addition to their financial gift, they also asked their corporate office to give us a gift card for $200 in smoothies along our route! Thank you, Thank you, Smoothie King! (and to our fellow BMXers, make sure you get a Smoothie King treat at their awesome event truck!
We also received our envelope from J&R Bicycles sponsorship. Although Kirk from J&R couldn’t join us at the start of the festivities, he and Delaney joined us later and we had some wonderful discussions about the ride ahead. Kirk looked pretty tired. He and his crew @ J&R Bicycles, the BIGGEST BMX superstore in the country, have been totally overhauling their retail store in the St. Petersburg area. Going to J&R is like walking into Willy Wonka’s Chocolate factory! (except for bicycle lovers!) I can’t wait to see the new store!
And the last sponsorship envelope was from Tampa BMX track and holds the most significance for us. You see, if it weren’t for the brilliance and hard work of Art Heinrichs at Tampa BMX, we would not have most of the sponsors we do. In addition to doing all the leg work to get those sponsors, Art and his fabulous board voted to donate ½ half of the race fees proceeds from tonight’s race. He presented us with $200 cash! Thank you, Art! And all of the wonderful people here at Tampa BMX! It’s good to be starting this adventure amongst a world class BMX family!
We also enjoyed about 50 emails and text messages while we rode our first 30 miles. (I only checked them when we stopped for a break or water). We posted instructions on how to track our ride online and we added two new followers! YEAH!
I can not wait to see what tomorrow brings!
