Today started as one of our nicest riding days yet. The morning air was cool enough that we all wore long sleeve tops over our standard short sleeve and sleeveless riding tops. We rode long subtle down hills that led to short uphills, some that we could cruise to the top of without even pedaling!
Our theory that the last 10 miles of the day is the hardest, held true today. Besides the on again off again rain, the meandering subtle down hills became tougher, steeper uphills. We probably only averaged about 8 mph and it felt like forever until we arrived at the hotel. When the clerk told us there were free cookies in the lobby 24 hours a day, the Beast and I wasted no time in bundling up a supply for the hotel room. I think we downed 2 or 3 each before we even got our room keys. It’s nice to have no guilt about what you eat … nice bonus of riding!
As the day was winding down, we received messages from fellow BMX parents that our BMX sanction, NBL (National Bicycle League) and the other BMX Sanction, ABA (American Bicycling Association) may have merged. We are still waiting to hear the full details but we are hoping that it’s a good thing for our sport and for the advancement of our riders toward Olympic dreams. I’ll keep you posted.
We enjoyed dinner at Cracker Barrel this evening compliments of Jacksonville BMX. Did I mention how much the Jax Track has spoiled us?? WE LOVE YOU GUYS!!
Now it’s time to call it a night. Tomorrow morning, we’ll ride the 48 miles to VMP BMX track in Petersburg, VA and spend the night and then on Thursday, we’ll ride into Richmond, VA to visit the BMX track there. On Friday morning, we’ll ride together with the mayor of Richmond in a “Bike to Work” day. Then, we’re off towards Pottstown, PA for the Memorial Classic over Memorial Day weekend.
