The launch for our ride is a little over 4 weeks away. Although I feel pretty on target with our training, I can't say I'll really know if we did it right until after we get out there and do the ride. We ordered our bicycle specific GPS device and afterwards found out the navigation software is on back order. Frankenbutt has been searching Amazon.com and other sources for a back up plan if it doesn't come in soon.
If I didn't mention it before, I contacted Schwalbe Tires regarding our bike ride and they generously offered to sell us the tires we need at 1/2 their website cost because they like the idea of our ride. When they originally made the offer, our size and model of tires were out of stock and still are. I spoke with Schwalbe today and they said they are still on back order but they are receiving a new container next week. He assured me our size tires would be on board and shipped out to me in time for our ride.
Although I've sent emails to all of the 25 tracks we plan to visit, I've only heard back from 5. The good news is, the 5 who responded have been super supportive and are looking forward to our arrival. I'm also working with the NBL on the possibility of inviting Special Needs members of each community to join us for a ride in parade and also invite them to explore the sport of BMX. I'm hoping to have all the contact info from the NBL by the end of the week so that we can start coordinating that aspect. I like the idea and hope we can make it happen.
Frankenbutt has given his notice at the bike shop. April 4th is his last day! Yeah! We still need to get a 3 day, 65 miles each, back to back ride in during the first or second week of April. Frankenbutt worked today and he'll work tomorrow at the bike shop; On Wednesday we'll do a morning bike ride and then Frankenbutt will go over vehicles while the Beast and I go in for afternoon eye exams. I'm down to one pair of contact lenses and the Beast thinks she'd like to try contacts herself. To be on the safe side, I'll update her eyeglass prescription and order an extra pair of prescription sunglasses in case she has a problem with the contacts. I hope they don't say "back order", too. My son, Captain Oblivious, once waited 6 weeks for new contacts because he has such an unusual prescription.
We also need to get our VW to Jersey so that our daughter, the Editor, can use it this summer when she's home for college. I'm encouraging her to take a summer job since she'd like to study abroad in England during the Spring 2012 semester. This Thursday morning, we'll rent a tow dolly (it's actually cheaper than paying for the gas of a 2nd car) and hook the Vdub to the back of our Dodge pickup truck and head for Jersey. We'll drop the Vdub at our Gmom's Friday evening, spend the night at my mom's and then hit the Jack Frost Classic BMX race on Saturday at the Egg Harbor Township, NJ track. We'll have dinner with my mom Saturday evening and hang out Sunday with her; Sunday evening we'll have dinner with Gmom (the Beast's Great grandmother and one of my good friends)before we head back to FL on Monday, arriving home Tuesday evening. Some time during my Jersey stay, I might work up the courage to tell my mom about our bike ride trip. She's a world class worry-er and I hate to have her worry any earlier than she has to.
I've been making lists and figuring out how to balance the weight in the pannier bags. I've been working together with sponsors to get logos onto our website and onto the custom jerseys that Riderz Ready has offered to make for us. I've also been developing sample press releases that tracks can send out prior to our arrival in hopes of building local publicity for them via our ride.
I've advertised our house for rent (no takers yet) and asked my former Census assistant to help with last minute rental details if we run out of time. I've started packing up things we won't need between now and our launch date. I've looked at the yard work ... and looked at it again. I've got to work up the right energy to get started on that. I'm not a good yard work kind of person. There just aren't any rugs to sweep the mess under out there!
I've been toying with the idea of a short, short haircut. I felt like Pedro from the movie Napoleon Dynamite after riding hard the other day. I was tempted to shave my head on the spot and almost seriously considered it since I'm not running for President! I'm completely jealous that guys can shave their heads and everyone thinks they look great. Not to mention, they can go shirtless when it's really hot! I can't get away with either of those options!
Before I close this blog for the night, I have a favor to ask of you. I started a page called "My Bike 'n Me" and it's for pictures of BMX riders and ANYONE who rides a bike. Please, take a moment and get a quick picture of you and your bike and email it to: firstname.lastname@example.org. You can even send me one from your childhood. Just include your first name, your home BMX track or the town you call home and send it. It would be nice to see who's been following our blog, too.
